The time we spent outside the U.S. was an education in learning what is important to people in different cultures. When we went into restaurants we asked if they had enough food for us to order. The tourist season was over, and with it the money that keeps some economies going. We had many sites all to ourselves. Stores and restaurants were closed, owners hoping to make their year’s income from just a few months a year. I was told that in some countries pensions are being cut in half, unemployment is 20-25% and finding jobs with same responsibility and salary unlikely. There are problems here as well, but I don’t feel the hopelessness I felt in Europe.
